Organic Baby Nursery AUSTRALIA

“Wrap your baby in gentle Organic Cotton”

We don’t need to spell out the many benefits you get from using organic products in your home, on your bed and around your baby’s tiny body.

Mothers tell us …
“It Just Feels Better”

But not all organics are created equal. When shopping for a new baby, it’s important to know the facts. There are so many websites selling Organic Baby Bedding and Nursery Furniture In Australia it can be difficult to figure out which one will not only provide you with a genuinely safe product, but will also align with your values around organic certification, ethical sourcing, truly chemical free, high production standards, clean transporting and healthy living; reducing the chance of baby developing allergies, asthma, eczema, attention deficit and a range of other chemical sensitivities — and may possibly even prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Don’t get caught out buying cots, cradles, cribs, mattresses, mattress protectors, baby furniture, sheets, blankets, quilts, pillows, change tables or cute clothes for your baby, to then find out they weren’t truly organic and safe for use after all.

Our aim is to help you make wiser choices about which Organic Nursery Items are right for your Baby, ones that you’ll feel really good about, and ones you definitely won’t regret!

Panel 1

Don’t Make These Common Mistakes When Setting Up A Baby Nursery

What Not To Do

❌  For the best start possible, avoid using conventional bedding, sheets, blankets, quilts and pillows, no matter how ‘natural’ the retailer claims it to be, unless it is certified organic to conform with the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). Some are sold as ‘Non-iron’, ‘Easy care’, ‘Wrinkle free‘, ‘Permanent press’ and ‘Ultra Fresh’. They might sound good, but these are all created using chemical additives.

❌  Don’t get conned into buying Waterproofed Mattresses and Liners. We recommend you avoid placing babies tiny body on or near any conventional baby bedding that has fire retardants or water-proofing. This includes ‘Water-proof’ and ‘Flame-proof’. They might sound good, but these are also manufactured using chemical additives and highly toxic plastics.

❌  Don’t use Latex Mattresses or Mattresses with Latex in them. While it might make sense that the SIDS foundation recommends latex mattresses for their firmness, to us, an even more important aspect is that baby does NOT sleep on a toxic mattress full of chemicals which can exacerbate SIDS, allergies, asthma and so many other health issues.

❌  Do your best to stay away from Bamboo products too. They are NOT organic or even 100% natural. Both latex and bamboo must be converted with chemicals to produce products to wear or to sleep on. The addition of chemicals in manufacturing alters the organic state to man-made or ‘Synthetic’. Some advertisers now call them ‘natural latex’ and ‘organic bamboo’; it sounds better but it’s still synthetic. If they’re not certified by the Global Union, they are most likely not truly organic either. To find out more read Facts, Fiction & Myths Revealed.

❌  Don’t sleep babies on Baby Cots, Cribs, Cradles, Trundles, Bunks or Beds that are imported from other countries or made from imported timber. All of these must be fumigated before arriving in the country. A cot or crib can be a big-ticket item that makes accepting a hand-me-down a tempting way to save money. However, a used baby bed may not meet current safety standards and may also have had stains applied that can be poisonous if licked, chewed, touched or even simply inhaled regularly over a period of time..

❌ DO NOT use Pine Baby Furniture due to the high content of terpenes (turpentine).  People who suffer with allergies are allergic to pine, eucalypt and teatree because, even though they are natural materials, these plants are classed as volatile. It is the oil in them that make them so. Same for timbers like Cedar and Cyprus. DO NOT use furniture with chipboard, MDF or plywood backings either, or you are decreasing the chances of experiencing the real healthy benefits gained by purchasing a pure organic cotton mattress in the first place.

❌ Beware of toxic glues, paints and finishes on Baby Furniture. They might not (noticeably) negatively effect an adult, but all these chemicals produce a gas that most of us get so accustomed to smelling, we forget it’s even there.

❌  Avoid the adorable Baby Clothes from online stores or major retailers. Tell your family and friends you’d prefer Certified Organic Baby Clothes, Body Suits and Grow Suits instead and you won’t be tempted to use them just because you’ve been given them once baby is born. They might look cute, but the toxins contained in the dyes and the chemicals used in producing fabrics such as what retailers call 100% cotton and bamboo, is potentially harmful. If they’re not certified organic by GOTS, they’re most likely not. Plan in advance and have peace forevermore.

❌ Don’t bring hand-me-down or commercially produced toys into the room. There’s no need to introduce potential allergens into the space. Most of us remember having a favourite soft toy from childhood, but these cute creatures can cause more trouble than joy. That’s because they’re a prime breeding ground for dust mites and other allergens, and can also contain toxic fillings and dyes that irritate children’s (and adults) sensitivities.

❌  Don’t use plastic. Consider what you are doing when you buy plastic nappies, acrylic chairs or plastic storage chests. Toxic chemicals leach out of plastic and are found in the blood and tissue of nearly all of us. Exposure to them is linked to cancers, birth defects, impaired immunity, endocrine disruption and other ailments. You don’t need plastic for anything anymore.

❌  Don’t blindly take all the advice from major organizations, even us. While the SIDS foundation (for example), provides some really useful guidelines for baby safety and well-being, as far as we can ascertain the ‘SIDS’ foundation has never directly indicated the possibility that chemicals in conventional mattresses and bedding may be the cause. We believe chemicals (among other things) have a very strong bearing on these “sudden deaths”. If this were deemed to be true, making such a controversial statement would upset a lot of major players in the baby, textile and bedding Industries.

❌  Try not to get too caught up in the latest wave of media hype or fashion fads. The best health and safety methods are always based on simple education and common sense. And when you take your own path without being pulled by the crowd, you might well become the leader who helps others find a better way too.

❌  Baby Mattresses should NOT be placed directly on the floor OR on a flexible slat base. A bed base for babies, children and frankly all of us, should be firm, not flexible or sagging. Organic Cotton is a natural product perfect for Cot Mattresses, Crib Mattresses, Cradle Mattresses and Bassinet Mattresses. All these items need airflow as they are a breathing product and a hardwood slat base is ideal for this purpose. This in turn allows your baby to breath comfortably and release toxins while they sleep.

What To Do Instead

✔ It is for these reasons that we recommend a hardwood slat Organic Baby Cot or bed base MADE IN AUSTRALIA from Australian Timber. No toxic glues, No fumigation, No MDF, No Plywood and No Chemical Paint or finishes. These allow the mattress to receive continual air flow that helps dissipate unhealthy toxins picked up by the body during the day, and release them from the body naturally during sleep.

✔ For comfort, quality and peace of mind, use the purest, healthiest Certified Organic Baby Mattress from Organic Baby Mattress Australia with their 100% safety record. On the market since 2004 and they continuously receive positive comments and testimonials. They do start a little softer than conventional rubber mattresses but they do NOT contain chemicals and are thus far healthier for your baby. As cotton does not have a ‘memory’, it does not bounce back. The surface will become firmer with regular turning and use.

✔ Go for the best Organic Water-Resistant Organic Baby Mattress Protector Pads you can find so you don’t get sucked into a lulled sense of security with water-proofed products. Not only are they unnecessary, they cause run-off (let’s face it, the liquid needs to go somewhere) and they are also potentially harmful to your baby’s health.

✔ Think about what makes the most sense to you when it comes to Baby Safety, Health & Well-Being and the well-being of your family. Decide what’s right for your unique situation. As you are already reading this, we congratulate you for doing your own research. Thank you for being here. We hope we’ve been able to help make things clearer.

✔ We also recommend purchasing Organic Baby Bedding made with 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON as this has the highest standard of all, and companies like Organature® deliberately manufacture Above Certification Standards for a very personal reason. You know how conventional bedding always suggests washing prior to use? Not only are regular sheets generally stored in toxic plastic (made to look like cellophane), when you open them up, the smell is overwhelming. A huge difference when you open up Organic Cotton Bedding — no need to wash, a fresh, clean, almost earthy scent, ready to put straight on the bed. See the Organic Baby Nursery Australia range of Organic Baby Sheets, Quilts, Blankets and Mattresses.

✔ Get some Organic Baby Toys too. There are some unique organic baby mobiles on the market and you could even make a beautiful handcrafted one from things like natural bamboo cane, twine, brown paper, raw wool and dried leaves. Small things make a big difference and can be fulfilling and fun to do it yourself. Buying Certified Organic Filled Toys right from the start, eliminates the problem completely.

✔  For Organic Baby Storage, one idea is to recycle the organic cotton bags that are often wrapped around your organic bedding. An Australian Hardwood Timber chest of drawers, organic cotton lined laundry hamper and matching Australian Hardwood Timber change table are both beautiful, stylish and long lasting items that can be safely passed down through your family, for many generations to come. Cellophane Bags which are made from true cellulose (not plastic that’s made to look like cellophane), are great for storing clothes or bedding to protect them from the environment. We also use them in our own homes to store vegetables in the fridge and to freeze meat. Much better for everyone.

✔  Consider using the tried and true Organic Baby Nappies occasionally, instead of opting for disposable ones all the time. With 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, you can be assured they are super soft and fluffy and made from an ideal fabric to put next to your little babies sensitive skin. These could also be used to wipe up spills, as burp cloths, mini-towels and more.

✔ Choose Organic Baby Clothing that has been checked to contain high quality Certified Organic Fabric. An ideal material to be used as Baby Clothes and safe to place next to your babies skin no matter how sensitive it might be. See Organic Baby Clothes Australia.

✔ Find an Organic Baby Nursery Manufacturer in Australia that you trust and see what else they can do for you. A good business will care that their Cot Mattresses have undergone the voluntary standards testing. And an Australian family owned business like Organature® take the question of baby safety even further. It makes so much more sense to be thoughtful about what babies are inhaling though their nose, ingesting through their mouth and/or absorbing through their skin! They’ve thought about everything regarding the health of children by making sure there are definitely NO chemicals in any of the bedding products like there are in most regular bedding products. NO potential volatile oils such as you would get in pine nursery furniture, NO fumigation of mattress fillings, NO toxic timber finishes etc. Current advice is that the cot, crib, bassinet or cradle mattresses need to be ‘firm’ so that baby doesn’t suffocate. When the mattress is made from a natural and fully breathable medium such as Certified Organic Cotton, the likelihood of suffocation is minimised even further.

We prefer to go back to basics, always recommending you start with the simple things; fresh air, clean water, pure food, organic products, and most importantly, a happy heart.

Every Aussie Parent Should Read Before Buying Baby Products – CONSUMER AWARENESS GUIDE

For a restful nights sleep FREE from potentially dangerous ⚹Chemicals, avoid placing babies tiny body on or near any conventional baby bedding that has fire retardants, water-proofing, harmful glues or dyes. Some are sold as ‘Non-iron’, ‘Easy care’, ‘Wrinkle free‘, ‘Permanent press’, ‘Ultra Fresh’, ‘Waterproof’ and ‘Flame proof’. They might sound good, but these all require chemical additives to give them these properties that don't occur naturally. If you sleep them on products made from 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Certified Organic Cotton fabric and filling instead, you can be at peace knowing for sure, they are NOT breathing in any toxic fumes.

Information About Baby Bedding In Australia

Did you know that frequently present in conventional baby cot mattresses and bedding are ⚹High Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) like phosphorus, arsenic and antimony and nerve toxins like formaldehyde, benzene and toluene? Whether they be in the petroleum based, Polyethylene foam, the petroleum and chlorine based Vinyl or PVC used for waterproofing (a known carcinogen, let alone, one of the most environmentally unfriendly plastics used today), or the petroleum based Fire Retardants --- separately or together --- they make up a toxic soup that is linked to immune suppression, hormone disruption, developmental delays, learning and memory problems, behavior changes and cancer.

When your baby can sleep for up to 18 hours a day, do you really want them inhaling these chemicals? These chemicals off gas and also heat up during sleep, therefore intensifying the toxic effects.

PLEASE NOTE:
Latex MUST be GOLS certified!

Some people go nuts about BAMBOO SHEETS too because they're told that they are natural and anti-bacterial. But bamboo fibres must be converted with chemicals to produce the yarn. This makes the process man-made and therefore synthetic, not all natural and certainly not certified organic.

How To Give Your Baby A Healthier Start To Life

Our aim is to help raise happy, healthy babies and toddlers by relieving them of some of the thousands of chemicals in every day use. We recommend you start by providing them with a sound and healthy sleep on an Organic Cotton Mattress topped with an Organic Mattress Overlay and an Organic Mattress Protector to provide the best Water-Resistance possible using purely Certified Organic fabrics. No need to overwhelm their tiny systems with the toxins that can leech out of plasticised waterproofing. Cover your baby with fresh Organic Cotton Sheets, Quilt and Quilt Cover or a soft Organic Fleece Blanket. Protect yourself, your baby and all your family from Formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals found in most conventional bedding products, by choosing natural, eco-friendly, certified organic cotton instead.

Why It’s So Important To Buy Australian Made

Did you know that most conventional wooden furniture is made using toxic glues and finishes? Imported timber must be fumigated before it can enter the country. Almost all cots and cradles sold in Australia are imported, the majority are made in China. One cot we researched is made in Australia from imported timber, these timbers ARE fumigated. Some suppliers of cots are claiming made with ‘Australian Timber’, this may be true but they send the timber to China to produce the furniture more economically! What happens when it’s returned back to Australia? Australian quarantine regulations requires fumigation of timber and timber products. Fumigation chemicals are harmful to health, and a possible cause of SIDS. Some cots and cradles are also made here with MDF, full of formaldehyde, another cause of SIDS? Glued and finished with petro chemical paint and stain, another cause of SIDS? — It’s not worth the chance.

Organic Baby Nursery Australia

Because of the lack of healthy and wholesome baby nursery products actually made here in Australia, family owned businesses like Organature® found it essential to produce their own furniture from Australian Hardwood Timber, handcrafted specially from local Victorian Mountain Ash. NO Fumigation, NO Toxic chemicals, NO MDF, NO Chipboard, NO Plywood, NO Chemical Paint and NO harmful Glues are used during any part of the manufacturing process. There are 100% Organic Australian-Made Cots, Cradles, Trundles, Beds and Bunks here.

All Bed Linen and Hardwood Furniture is organic, natural, eco-friendly, toxin-free and Proudly MADE IN AUSTRALIA where they can guarantee the purity of the manufacturing process from start to finish. Let your baby sleep freely, happily and peacefully and give all young children the best start to life.

What Other People Have To Say

Kerry | 3 reviews |9/10/2015 | Words cannot express the peace of mind this mattress will give you. It is worth every $$$ that you spend. Did you notice how much babies love to sleep on their tummies with their face on the side and nose/mouth just above the mattress. Think about what they are breathing in. You have this mattress which is pure organic cotton bliss, then you have the average mattress with horrible synthetic materials and the chemicals they are treated with (which we often just don’t know about as of course they don’t advertise that bit). Couple that with a tiny little babies respiratory system and body. Do your research, minimise the risks wherever you can. I did my research and the safety and quality that Organature provides is exactly what I was looking for. I love my organic mattress!!!

Kelly Douglas | 5 reviews | 23/12/2018 | Love your products!! I have a baby sleeping soundly in the next room on a cradle mattress by Organature . Her cradle is next to the Victorian Ash king size bed you guys made us and the next room along hosts a cot by Organature as well.

Dianne | 2 reviews | 20/08/2013 | We are really pleased with this mattress. We also purchased the cot and being a first time Mum, I was worried how he would go transitioning from the small cradle to the cot but he slept, well, like a baby!! Mum, Dad and baby boy all very pleased! I highly recommend the innerspring mattress and the cot. I love that my little man has a 100% organic bed. I smile every time I walk past it.

Alex and Ryan Broadhurst1 reviews | 19/09/2018 | After looking around the big baby stores for good quality and safe baby furniture, without success, we were so grateful to discover your website. Your assistance from the first call was amazing and after we placed the order the whole process was perfectly handled. The items arrived at the promised times and in perfect condition, the assembly of all of the furniture was also extremely quick and simple. Everyone who visits our home comments on the quality and appearance of the furniture. Thank you so much for all of your help and assistance, we can’t thank you enough and we are constantly recommending you to our expectant friends.

Lisa Gomes5 reviews |14/02/2017 | Nothing else compares to the quality of the cotton. After years of wasting so much money on sub-standard products filled with toxic chemicals, you have no idea how happy I am to know there is a place I can order everything I need and know that I will be happy with the quality.

Luciana | 1 reviews | 01/04/2013 | I LOVE LOVE LOVE this mattress! Worth every cent & definitely value for money. Highly recommend to anyone. The service was also lovely. Thanks.

Nicole Groch5 reviews |22/01/2019 | I research and write about toxic free living for my site livingsafe.com.au and so completely trust Organature as a company and all it stands for. Our entire family sleep on their inner-spring mattresses as well as use only Organature bedding. The mattresses are incredibly supportive and firm, yet very comfortable. The quilts, pillows, blankets and sheets are super soft and feel fresh and pure. The peace of mind of knowing your children are sleeping toxic free and are not inhaling VOC’s from fire retardants, petrochemicals, pesticides and fungicides is wonderful. I would highly recommend Organature to everyone!

Chelsea1 reviews | 26/03/2014 | The pillows are a life saver, after becoming allergic to my cheap nasty polyester pillows I had to throw them out and had been sleeping on a rolled up cotton towel. After punching in 100% cotton pillows into google I came across Organature and found that they had exactly what I wanted, cotton fill inside and cotton cover outside, chemical and fragrance free and organic to boot, what a bonus. I received my new pillows the very next morning after purchasing online. I bought a standard half fill for myself as I like to lay pretty flat and curl the very edge of the pillow up into the nape of my neck and a standard pillow for my boyfriend. We couldn't be happier with the pillows they are very comfortable and best of all no smells or nasty chemicals to make me sick.

Claire Bishop5 reviews | 3/08/2016 | Thanks so much for all the effort you invested in ensuring I received a cot that was safe and secure for Hugo. The new cot and mattress are beautiful and I appreciate them even more now that I know what a lovely team of people are behind the Organature business.

Sylvia Ura5 reviews |15/12/2017 | I purchased a gorgeous mattress and linen for my then unborn baby earlier this year. Well – baby “Zara” is now just over three months and absolutely loves sleeping on the mattress and sheets. I have been recommending your products to other mums-to-be.

Pam1 reviews | 28/10/2018 | I suffer from dust mite allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities. I bought these products as they were allergy free & chemical free. The best decision I ever made. The service was excellent & the product unbelievable. When we changed our bed to the king size one, I purchased again. You will not be disappointed!

Lyn Pascoe1 review | 21/06/2018 | We bought a mattress, an underlay, an overlay, a quilt, some pillows and pillow covers. Loving the feeling of organic cotton! My kids love their new pillows! Very helpful service. I highly recommend this retailer. - via Facebook.

What Cot Mattress Is Best For A Baby – CONSUMER AWARENESS GUIDE

How To Know What’s Best For Your Baby

Choosing a cot mattress might seem like a trivial task but it’s one that warrants careful consideration. The mattress is as important as the cot itself, and we recommend buying the best one you can.

Why does it matter so much? For one thing, babies spend a lot of time in their cots. It might seem hard to believe, especially when you’re getting up to feed a fussy baby in the middle of the night, but infants sleep up to 18 hours a day.

So much has been said about which type of mattress is the best for your baby’s cot, cradle or bassinet. Fashions change, ideas change. Firstly we are advised to use a ‘bumper’, and then we are told a bumper is a possible factor in the SIDS debate, restricting airflow. We were advised to sleep our babies on their tummies so that if they should be sick they will not choke; next, tummy sleeping is BAD, it too is a possible SIDS factor.

Have you noticed how recently many babies have a very flat back of head, due to pressure from constantly lying in the one position? This is Plagiocephaly or ‘Flat Head Syndrome’. While we do not dispute that babies lying on their backs has probably saved the lives of possibly thousands, we are convinced that it is more to do with them NOT lying on their tummies and breathing in directly the toxic off-gassing of fumes from the plastic waterproofing, foam rubber, latex or any other synthetic mattress.

A cot mattress needs to be ‘firm’ so that baby doesn’t suffocate. When the mattress is made from a natural, toxin-free and fully breathable medium, the likelihood of suffocation is vastly minimised.

Here in Australia we have the highest levels of allergies in the world. The industrialised world has created many new chemicals and our immune systems are vulnerable to these environmental changes. We believe it is vital to reduce chemical overload and especially that of our babies and children. For that same reason, Organature® found it necessary to create a bassinet, cradle and cot mattress made with highest quality 100% Certified Organic Cotton fabric and filling possible, as back in 2004 when this family business was founded out of necessity, there were no fully Certified Organic Mattresses being produced here at all. In 2019, they are still the best, safest and manufactured to the highest standards available in Australia today. Read more about The Organature® Story.

Consider An Organic Bassinet Or Cradle Mattress

These futon style Organic Cotton Bassinet, Cradle, Pram And Porta-Cot Mattresses are made to order in the Organature® workrooms and are hand manufactured from 100% Certified Organic Cotton. The natural outer fabric contains no dyes or bleaches. The filling is 100%, air cleaned Certified Organic Cotton. To provide your baby with a lump free Organic Cotton Mattress the cotton has to be carded (fluffed out). Due to the nature of the filling, they cannot strictly adhere to overall size and height. They look somewhat like a flat pillow. They are slightly irregular, and the height can depend on how fluffed out the filling is, but they do get close to between 5-6 cm depth. These baby mattresses contain no formaldehyde or flame retardant chemicals, no nerve toxins, absolutely no additives, just the ultimate, purest product available.

Buy A New Cot Or Crib Mattress

Buy a new Innerspring Organic Cotton Baby Mattress if possible. For one thing, buying it new ensures that the mattress is sanitary. If you buy a used mattress or accept a hand-me-down you won’t know for sure how it was cared for or stored. Mold can grow in improperly stored cot mattresses and bacteria can fester on the surface from liquids (nappy leakage, spit-up) that weren’t properly cleaned up. If you buy a new mattress for your first child and keep it clean and stored in a dry environment, you can use it for your next child, and the next.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is that babies do not sleep on a mattress laced with chemicals, which can exacerbate SIDS and bring on allergies, asthma, eczema and other health issues too.

In recent years, as we became personally aware of the problems created by repeated exposure to toxins in the environment, our own children and grandchildren have followed this path of trying to reduce the chemicals in their lives too. It is a matter of taking one step at a time and where better to begin, than with a new baby.

Use An Organic Mattress Protector

To protect your babies mattress always use a well fitted, washable, water-resistant bassinet, cradle or cot size Organic Baby Mattress Protector to keep the baby’s sleeping environment as clean and sanitary as possible. Being 100% Certified Organic, these mattress protectors are not waterproof. Water proofing is plasticising which can only be formed using chemicals so we do not use, endorse or promote waterproofing. Instead we recommend using a mattress protector that is ‘Water Resistant’ and may even be a bit larger than your mattress, with elastic around the edges so it’s easy to tuck any excess under the mattress.

Combined With An Organic Mattress Overlay

Organic Mattress Overlays are generally made from fleece fabric similar to sweater fabric. They sit on top of the mattress and are bound around the edges. They are not totally waterproof either, but combined with the Mattress Protector, they will give you maximum protection achievable without using a synthetic or plastic protector. Certified Organic Cotton fleece has a natural wax, which makes it water resistant. These two products together provide the BEST water resistance that Organic Products can possibly provide.
